Quick Studies in Oil
This is a selection of two-hour quick studies in oil done at the weekly Sertoma Arts Center (Raleigh, NC) portrait painters gathering, as well as a selection of plein air paintings I have done. This is a lot of fun with no pressure, and an excellent opportunity to hone drawing and portrait painting skills. None of the portrait studies have been fussed over after leaving the painting session, and are, therefore, pretty raw and not to be regarded as finished portraits, but rather as "portrait impressions" or "character studies". Most works are painted on 16" x 12" canvas panels (some are smaller), which were toned ahead of time with acrylic raw umber which shows through in lots of areas and gives the paintings a harmonious warmth.
